(January 5, 2005)

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office wishes to remind motorists that many county roadways remain flooded. Motorists should avoid traveling in low-lying or flood prone areas, as they are likely dangerous and impassible. If there is water covering the roadway, do not attempt to drive through that area. One cannot be certain that the pavement underneath the water has not been washed out by flooding. On the evening of January 5, 2005, one Johnson County motorist decided that he would disobey the Road Closed signs on County Road 200N between Centerline Road and County Road 75W. As a result, he became stuck in fast-moving and cold high water. Emergency crews from the Bargersville and Franklin Fire Departments, and Deputies from the Sheriff's Office as well as the Sheriff's Scuba Team responded. Scuba Team Commander Randy Werden waded out into the water and retrieved the vehicle. The suspended driver of the car was cited for Disregarding a Traffic Control Device and other violations, and was summonsed into the Franklin City Court. Motorists are reminded that it is against the law to drive around Road Closed Signs. Violators, like the example above, will be cited.
