Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a car versus moped motor vehicle crash which occurred Monday morning August 20, 2012 on US-31 just south of the northern junction of SR-252 near Amity. At about 6:39 a.m, Sheriff's dispatchers received a call from a man reporting that he had struck a man on a moped riding on US-31. Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene of the incident in conjunction with members of the Amity Volunteer Fire Department (AFD Chief Jackie Brockman pictured in the upper left hand corner photo). Once on the scene, fire department responders determined the injuries were severe enough to warrant a response by Lifeline Helicopter. The medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene of the incident to take over patient care for the seriously injured man who was riding the moped.

Traffic was tied up in the area for about two hours as Crash Investigator Steve Wray used state-of-the-art laser equipment to make a permanent record of the crash scene. Sheriff Doug Cox, Chief Deputy Randy Werden, and Road Division Major Jerry Pickett all assisted Deputies Steve Wray and Deputy John Cave on the scene of the incident with the investigation or traffic assistance duties.

This incident underscores the need for additional safety measures to be put in place to make travel safer for all motorists sharing roadways with slower moving modes of transportation. Several legislative efforts have been discussed in recent years but none have made it through the legislative process to be passed.
